Wisconsin is becoming hotbed for cycling podcasts. This should come as no surprise as our lovely state has long been a hotbed of cycling with groundbreaking events like Superweek and the Chequamegon 40 all the way up through Wisconsin Off Road Series, fat-bike races series like Snow Crown and Hugh Jass, and Tour of America's Dairyland. Not to mention the hundreds of recreational events that take place throughout the year, like the Dairlyland Dare, Ride Across Wisconsin, and the Door County Century.
But last summer, Ben Welnak, founder of Mountain Bike Radio boomeranged himself and his family back to Wisconsin to put down roots and he brought along Mountain Bike Radio partner, Matt McCulley to help establish the network of podcast's homebase in Hayward, home of the world class CAMBA mountain bike trail system.
Well, the mountain biking community in Wisconsin is pretty close-knit to begin with, and with the Midwest Cycling Podcast we're realizing these networks are even smaller than we'd imagined. So it didn't take long for us to run into Ben and Matt at the races, which is exactly what happened earlier this summer the Reforestation Camp WEMS race.
Matt and Ben are great guys and we decided we'd do an episode of the #MWCPod and get the story on Mountain Bike Radio. We also decided we'd make a team of podcasters for the Wausau24 mountain bike race, and viola. Here we are! Meet team Podcaster Disaster!
Well, as bad luck would have it, Matt contracted Lyme's Disease and couldn't race. Don't worry everyone, he recovered and has since moved back to Colorado, which, if you'll remember, is actually part of the midwest. Our friend, Anna Johnson, took his place and that's how Team Podcaster Disaster became a winning co-ed team. We also placed 5th overall in the 4-person open, which was pretty darn impressive if you ask me.
Anyway, tune into this episode to learn all about the history of your favorite Podcast network, Mountain Bike Radio. And, incidentally, check out The Up North Guy, Ben's laser engraving venture. If you need anything engraved for your business or event prizes, or bottle openers for your bike/drinking team, Ben is your man.
Thanks for listening, everyone.
